Lesson 12

Uploading Web Pages

The programs used to upload web pages to the user's ISP on the internet are called FTP (file transfer protocol) programs. Most of these are operated by 'dragging' all the files from one window (representing the users hard disk) to another which represents the ISP's server.

There is, however, a program which does the job at the click of a single button. The rules which control which files are affected can be set up while off-line. This makes uploading a web site very easy. The program, Site Publisher (by Helexis) controls which files require reloading, which files are to be deleted and which files are to downloaded.

Keeping your Web Site up-to-date

You should update your web site as often as is needed. There are some tricks that you can use to make your website seem to be to be up to date. E.G. Todays date appears at the bottom of the page. On the home page, the date of Easter is given for this year. Both of these are produced by a language called Java Script. It is also used to change the 'page of the day' every day over a nine-week period.

Another way of making sure that your web site does not look neglected is to check your links to other sites. Over time, these tend to change. A site is closed or changes its name. One thing you can do is to compose your own '404' page--'page not available'.
